Can Beetroot Juice Help Lower Blood Pressure? Here’s What the Science Says

High blood pressure is often called a “silent” health problem because many people feel perfectly well even when their readings are consistently too high.
Yet over time, uncontrolled hypertension places additional strain on the heart and blood vessels and increases the risk of serious cardiovascular problems.
Medication is important and sometimes necessary, but everyday lifestyle choices also play a major role in blood pressure management.
One food that has attracted considerable scientific attention is surprisingly simple:
Beetroot.
Its naturally occurring nitrates may help blood vessels relax and support healthier blood pressure.
So, does drinking beetroot juice really work?
Let’s look at the evidence.
Why High Blood Pressure Matters
Blood pressure measures the force of blood pushing against the walls of your arteries.
When that pressure remains elevated over a long period, it can gradually damage blood vessels and increase the workload on the heart.

This contributes to a higher risk of:
Heart attack
Stroke
Heart failure
Kidney disease
Other cardiovascular complications
Because hypertension may produce few or no obvious symptoms, regular blood pressure checks are important, particularly if you have other cardiovascular risk factors.
What Does Beetroot Have to Do With Blood Pressure?
Beetroot naturally contains high amounts of inorganic nitrate.
After you eat or drink nitrate-rich foods, your body converts some of these nitrates into nitric oxide.
Nitric oxide plays an important role in cardiovascular health because it helps blood vessels relax and widen.
When blood vessels are able to relax more effectively, blood can flow with less resistance—which may help lower blood pressure.
And beetroot isn’t the only source.
Dietary nitrates are also naturally found in leafy vegetables such as:
Spinach
Lettuce
Rocket
Celery
Cabbage
Other leafy greens
In Malaysia, this provides another reason to include plenty of vegetables such as bayam, sawi and other leafy greens as part of your meals.
What Did the Beetroot Juice Study Find?
One frequently cited clinical trial published in the American Heart Association journal Hypertension investigated adults with high blood pressure.
Participants were randomly assigned to drink 250 mL of nitrate-rich beetroot juice or a nitrate-depleted placebo beverage every day for four weeks.
The study found that people receiving dietary nitrate experienced sustained reductions in blood pressure.
Average clinic blood pressure fell by approximately: 8 mmHg systolic / 4 mmHg diastolic
among those consuming nitrate-rich beetroot juice.
That is a meaningful reduction.
Researchers also observed improvements in blood-vessel function and arterial stiffness.
However, there is an important point:
This does not mean beetroot juice should replace blood pressure medication.
The study involved only 68 participants and lasted four weeks. While the findings are encouraging, hypertension management needs to consider your overall cardiovascular risk, medical history and individual blood pressure readings.
Think of beetroot as a potentially useful addition to a heart-healthy lifestyle—not a treatment replacement.
So, Should You Drink Beetroot Juice Every Day?
You don’t necessarily need to.
The broader lesson from the research isn’t:
“Everyone with hypertension needs beetroot juice.”
It’s that eating more nitrate-rich vegetables may support cardiovascular health.

If you enjoy beetroot, you can incorporate it in different ways:
🥤 Beetroot juice: Choose unsweetened varieties without unnecessary added sugar.
🥗 Salads: Slice or grate beetroot and combine it with leafy vegetables, nuts and lean protein.
🥤 Smoothies: Blend beetroot with vegetables and a moderate amount of fruit rather than turning it into a high-sugar drink.
🍽️ Roasted beetroot: Roast beetroot as a side dish alongside vegetables and lean protein.
🥬 Leafy vegetables: Remember that beetroot isn’t your only nitrate source. Regularly eating different leafy greens can also contribute dietary nitrates.
Don’t Forget Potassium
Another nutrient associated with healthy blood pressure is potassium.
Potassium helps counter some of the effects of sodium and supports normal blood-vessel function. The American Heart Association notes that potassium-rich foods can help with blood pressure control partly by helping the body remove more sodium. (www.heart.org)
Common potassium-containing foods include:
Bananas
Oranges
Papaya
Avocado
Tomatoes
Potatoes
Beans and lentils
Leafy green vegetables

Rather than focusing on one special food, building meals around a wide variety of vegetables, fruits, legumes and minimally processed foods is a more sustainable strategy.
⚠️ Important: People with kidney disease or those taking certain medications may need to limit potassium. Speak with your doctor or dietitian before deliberately increasing your intake.
Salt Still Matters
Adding beetroot juice while continuing to consume large amounts of sodium won’t magically solve high blood pressure.
For many Malaysians, sodium doesn’t only come from the salt shaker.
It can also be hidden in:
Soy sauce
Oyster sauce
Fish sauce
Sambal and packaged sauces
Instant noodles
Processed meats
Salted fish
Canned foods
Fast food
Highly processed snacks
Soups and gravies
Even different varieties of salt—such as sea salt—still contain substantial sodium.
A more useful strategy is to gradually reduce heavily salted and processed foods while flavouring meals with herbs, spices, garlic, ginger, chilli, lime or lemon.
Food Is Only One Part of the Solution
Managing blood pressure effectively usually requires several lifestyle habits working together.
1. Move Regularly
Regular physical activity strengthens your heart and can help improve blood pressure over time.
Walking, cycling, swimming, dancing or other activities you enjoy are all good places to start.
2. Maintain a Healthy Weight
For people who are overweight, even modest weight reduction may improve blood pressure and other cardiovascular risk factors.
The focus should be on gradual, sustainable changes rather than crash diets.
3. Manage Stress
Stress may temporarily raise blood pressure and can indirectly affect health by contributing to poor sleep, emotional eating, smoking or excessive alcohol consumption.
Build small recovery periods into your day—even a short walk, breathing exercise or break away from your screen can help.
4. Sleep Well
Poor sleep and sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnoea are associated with hypertension.
If you regularly snore heavily, wake up gasping, or remain extremely sleepy despite spending enough time in bed, consider discussing this with your healthcare provider.
5. Don’t Smoke
Smoking damages blood vessels and substantially increases cardiovascular risk.
If you smoke, quitting is one of the most meaningful steps you can take for your heart.
Know Your Blood Pressure, Not Just Your Diet
You can eat well and still have hypertension.
That’s why monitoring matters.
Blood pressure isn’t something you can reliably estimate based on how you feel.

A Word of Caution Before Drinking Large Amounts of Beetroot Juice
Beetroot is generally safe as a food for most people, but more isn’t necessarily better.
Speak to your doctor or dietitian before regularly consuming concentrated beetroot juice if you:
Already have low blood pressure
Take medication for hypertension
Have kidney disease
Have been advised to restrict potassium
Have a history of certain kidney stones
Have another medical condition requiring dietary restrictions
Beetroot can also temporarily turn urine or stools pink or reddish in some people. This is usually harmless, although unexplained blood in urine or stools should never simply be assumed to be caused by beetroot.
The Bigger Picture: Don’t Look for One “Miracle” Drink
Beetroot juice is interesting because its nitrate content has genuine biological effects, and human research suggests it may help support lower blood pressure. (AHA Journals)
But cardiovascular health isn’t built around one drink.

A better question than: “What can I drink to lower my blood pressure?” is:
“What daily habits can I build to keep my blood pressure healthier over the long term?”
That might mean eating more vegetables, reducing sodium, walking more often, sleeping better, managing stress and taking medication exactly as prescribed.
Beetroot can be one part of that picture.
It just shouldn’t be the whole picture.
